Amsterdam Hotels Price Comparisons
Amsterdam - capital city of The Netherlands. Population of approx. 2 million.
From its humble beginnings as a fishing village, Amsterdam became one of Europe's most historic cities, and many of the historic sites can still be found throughout the city. Home to the oldest stock exchange in the world, Amsterdam is a leading international business, finance and cultural centre. Tourism attracts over 4 million tourists annually and the city is a favourite with visitors to Europe because it makes a perfect base for travel to the nearby major cities of Europe, the UK and Scandinavia. Amsterdam is famous for its nightlife in clubs and discotheques, for the tulips in spring and for the innumerable concerts and festivals held throughout the year. Surrounded on three sides by water, Amsterdam has an oceanic climate of moderate summers and cool to mild winters. The period from October to March is usually cloudy and damp with drizzle and rain. The international airport sees flights from most of the major cities worldwide. In addition there is an international train service connecting with Eurostar trains to England and most countries on the Continent. Amsterdam has an impressive city transit network of metros, buses, trams, ferries and trains so getting around is a breeze. Because of its small size and its flat terrain, Amsterdam is an ideal city for walking, and the ever present bicycles are a popular form of transport in around the city... and the rest of the Netherlands. There is a wealth of historic and impressive architecture throughout Amsterdam, canals and islands linked by hundreds of bridges, world renowned museums and amazing art galleries, performing art centres, churches, unique flower and cheese markets and hundreds of coffee shops and restaurants. Especially popular are the restaurants offering Asian and Indonesian food. There are small specialty shops, numerous department stores and open air markets offering a wide range of clothing from fashion designer labels to locally produced items.
