Argentina At A Glance

The Argentine Republic, better known as Argentina, occupies a large, elongated part of South America and has a long South Atlantic coastline on the eastern side of the country. Argentina's neighbours are Chile to the west, Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay to the north and Uruguay to the north east. The second-largest country on the South American continent, Argentina is also the eighth-largest country in the world. The official language is Spanish, with local variations spoken in different regions.

Argentina is a country of many landscapes with elevations that range from almost 7,000 metres above sea level to 40m below sea level. The rugged Andes dominate the western parts of the country and include the Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the world outside of the Himalayas. The harsh terrains of Patagonia occupy much of the south, the rich plains of La Pampa lie in the middle and there are rainforest jungles in the far north east.

Buenos Aires, the capital, is a port city of some 3 million people that sits on the banks of Rio de la Plata, the river that forms the border with Uruguay. Traffic congestion in Buenos Aires is part and parcel of the city and getting around on foot is often a more viable option. The city is laid out in a grid pattern and finding your way around the city is not difficult. The commuter subway system is a good way to criss-cross the city.

Some of Argentina's most popular tourist attractions include the awesome Iguazú Falls in the north-east corner of the country, the Nahuel Huapi National Park in the Patagonian foothills of the Andes, El Calafate at the Glaciers National Park and the  "must see" Perito Moreno Glacier and the Ibera Wetlands nature reserve with its eco village of Colonia Carlos Pellegrini.

There are numerous ski centers that operate in the Andes during the winter and Las Leñas and San Carlos de Bariloche are two of the more popular ski destinations.
