Athens - capital city of Greece. Population of approx. 3.7 million

Surrounded on three sides by mountains Athens is situated on the south west side of a peninsula in the Greek mainland. Summers are hot and dry, winters are wet with some snow and spring and late autumn are the best times to visit. Greek is the main language spoken but most people can speak English.

The city is one of the worlds oldest and boasts a wealth of historical and architectural styles in buildings and monuments dating from Roman times to modern. The Parthenon, the Acropolis, the Daphni Monastry and many other ancient Greek buildings and landmarks are wonderful examples of early western civilization. The National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum are must-see places on any visit.

The port of Piraeus is the maritime gateway to Athens for cruise ships and ferries. A Metro rail system, trains, buses, coaches and the international airport all combine to connect Athens with other European and major cities throughout the world, as well as other cities in Greece. Public transport and taxis in and around the city is not expensive.

There are a large number of family operated shops offering shoppers the opportunity to purchase wonderful embroideries, folk art, antiques and souvenirs. Eating and socializing is a favourite local pastime so there are a vast number of eateries ranging from fast food outlets to elegant restaurants and family tavernas catering to every budget.

There is plenty of nightlife on offer in Athens with clubs and bars playing all types of music, along with museums, art galleries, parks and gardens to explore and numerous theatrical venues provide entertainment throughout the year.
