Barcelona - major city of Spain. Population of approx. 2 million

The beautiful old city of Barcelona, considered by many to be a "must see" European destination, is located on the north-east coast of Spain, facing the Mediterranean Sea. It is the second largest city in Spain. Catalan is the official language spoken but most shops and bars have staff who can speak English.

The hosting of the 1992 Olympic Games gave Barcelona a much needed boost to their tourism industry. It is one of the Europe's major economic and financial centres and is also a leader in the worlds of fashion, entertainment, arts and science as well as other economic and cultural fields.

Rich in history and dating back two thousand years, there is plenty to see in and around the city. There are many museums and art galleries to explore and historical buildings and churches which display a vast array of architectural styles.

There are numerous outdoor markets to browse, plenty of entertainment in the form of opera, live music, theatre and festivals, and many lovely sandy beaches for swimming or sunbaking. The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and mild winters.

With one of Europe's principal ports, a busy international airport, high speed rail and extensive motorway networks, Barcelona has today become a popular destination for millions of tourists. The best way to get around the city is by public transport, walking, or hiring a scooter or bike. Driving yourself is not recommended.

There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and food outlets offering a variety of local cuisine and food from all parts of the world. Most restaurants and cafes are closed during the hours of 5pm to 6pm.

Depending on your budget, a choice of accommodation is available from hostels, to guest houses, to mid range hotels or to expensive five star hotels.
