The history of Beijing (formerly known as Peking) dates back thousands of years through the rise and fall of many dynasties. The Beijing of today is a mixture of both old and modern architecture, of opulent temples, palaces, ornate gates and stone walls. Beijing successfully hosted the 2008 Summer Olympic and Para Olympic Games. It is the political, educational, religious and cultural centre of China with historical sites such The Great Wall of China, The Forbidden City and the The Temple of Heaven, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has numerous museums, art galleries and traditional Chinese theatres. Green belts are dotted around the city providing for relaxation, recreation and entertainment. Beijing is a city of finance, real estate. electronics, computers and pharmaceuticals as well as a booming automobile industry. The language spoken is Mandarin Chinese although English is spoken at major hotels and main tourist attractions. The preferred mode of transport around the city is taxi, with officially licenced operators easily recognized by licence plates commencing with a "B". The city bus system is cheap and convenient if you know where you are going. Buses also operate to the main tourists sites. International driver’s licences are not recognized in China. The summer months of May to August are hot and humid and the winters are cold and dry with occasional snow. With dust storms occurring in the spring, the best time to visit is in the autumn months of September and October. Cheap and delicious meals are available throughout the city with restaurants offering local Chinese dishes and international cuisine. Tea is a popular drink and there are numerous tea houses, stalls and stand alone establishments offering tea ceremonies and tea tasting. A variety of accommodation can be found throughout the city ranging from budget hostels, mid range hotels to more expensive hotels and resorts. This website lists over 840 available hotels in and around Beijing... that's almost 250 more than New York City! Most hotels have an on-site restaurant. There are numerous interesting markets to explore where haggling is essential but visitors are advised to be wary of fake money, cheats and touts. Alternatively, there are shopping areas, department stores and hotel shops offering souvenirs, silk clothing, carpets, porcelain and traditional Chinese items.
