Berlin - capital city of Germany. Population of approx. 3.5 million

Berlin is located in the north-east of Germany and is the largest city in the country. The region has a climate of warm summers, cold winters with snow, mild but chilly temperatures during spring and autumn and rainfall throughout the year.

While the city's economy depends on a diverse range of industries, it is best known for its research institutes, universities, cultural and political events and is the home of Europe's biggest convention centre.

Two international airports, long distance rail and motorways bring millions of tourists to the city every year. A superb public transport system within the city helps to make Berlin one of the most visited and popular cities in Europe.

There is plenty for the visitor to see and do. There are still a few old and historic buildings and remarkable churches which escaped the ravages of war or that have been restored. Part of the famous Berlin Wall, which originally divided the city into East and West Germany, still stands as does the Brandenburg Gate which has now been restored.

There are a large number of museums, art galleries and palaces to visit. Wander through the botanical gardens and parks or enjoy a performance at one of the many theatres, opera houses or cultural events offered throughout the year. Have fun shopping for fashions, or souvenirs in the biggest department store in Continental Europe, or try the numerous shopping malls, department stores and boutiques.

With a diverse and multicultural population, Berlin has countless restaurants, cafes and eateries offering traditional German food and international culinary experiences. There is also an abundance of vibrant nightlife on offer in clubs, bars and discotheques.

Accommodation is available for every type of budget. There are cheap youth hostels, bed and breakfasts or budget hotels. In addition, there are plenty of hotels and all major hotel chains are represented. Berlin hotels are generally less expensive than those in other European cities.
