Brisbane Hotels Price Comparisons
Renowned for its great climate and laid-back lifestyle, this river city was first established as a penal settlement in 1824. Modern day Brisbane is a rapidly growing cosmopolitan city with excellent accommodation choices for both corporate and leisure visitors. The compact CBD area is surrounded by a huge suburban area that was, until the 90's, the largest metropolitan area in the southern hemisphere. The dominant feature of the city is the people-friendly Brisbane River with its river-side walks, bikeways and parks that provide recreational river access. Brisbane has an extensive network of city bus and ferry services that makes it very easy to tour all the local attractions and highlights. Some of the places of interest in and around Brisbane include a walking tour of the Heritage Trail, Customs House with its corinthian columns and copper dome, the historic St. Stephen's Church, the Old Windmill constructed during the original convict settlement and the Old Commissariat Store from the same era. A visit to the gardens and scenic look-out at Mt. Cootha is a must on any Brisbane tour. Newstead House is a beautifully preserved historic homestead set beside the river. St. Helena Island contains the ruins of one of Queensland's major prisons. Adrenalin junkies can abseil the rock faces along the river while the more sedate can visit several open-air weekend markets. The local wildlife is a must, with Alma Park Zoo and Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary within easy reach from central Brisbane. Paddlewheel cruises ferry visitors up and down the Brisbane River, and the Moreton Island ferry makes it possible to feed wild dolphins at Tangalooma Island. The Gold Coast, Queensland's famous holiday destination, is an easy one hour drive south of Brisbane on the Pacific Motorway. This is Australia's #1 beach holiday region and the diversity of Gold Coast accommodation is unmatched anywhere else in Australia. Gold Coast theme parks are an important part of the Gold Coast holidays scene. A one hour drive north of Brisbane lies the Sunshine Coast, another popular beach holiday destination which offers a myriad of Sunshine Coast accommodation in holiday apartments and resorts.
