Budapest - capital city of Hungary. Population of approx. 1.7 million

This gem of central Europe, located on the Danube River in central Hungary, resulted from the amalgamation three adjoining cities in 1873 to form the city now known as Budapest. Regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Budapest is listed as a Unesco World Heritage city for its wealth of historical, cultural and architectural buildings, castles, churches, museums and art galleries.

Budapest is a centre for national and international finance with tourism and numerous branches of industry supporting its economy. There is an international airport and a reliable public transport network of bus, tram and rail which covers the urban areas. A hydrofoil operates from Budapest to Vienna.

Summers are warm with fairly high humidity, autumn is ideal for visiting, winters are cloudy, damp and very cold and spring sees the flowers and greenery making an appearance. Rain falls throughout the year.

There are numerous geothermal springs, spas and saunas throughout the city. Cruises on the Danube River are popular. Hire a bike and cycle around the city, attend a performance at the spectacular Budapest State Opera House, or at one of the concert halls. Plenty of bars, clubs, dance halls, discos and casinos provide a vibrant nightlife.

Children will be thrilled with a visit to the circus, a theme park or to the zoo. There are numerous festivals conducted throughout the year with local and international performances of rich, cultural programmes of music and dance.

Budapest is a city of restaurants, cafes, coffee houses and eateries that offer local and international foods. Pastries are very popular with locals and tourists alike. As a rule of thumb, eat where the locals eat, and drink where the locals drink and you will more than likely enjoy an excellent meal.

Shopping malls, plazas and souvenir shops abound or visit the Great Market Hall for traditional Hungarian linen, lace pottery and souvenirs.

All types of accommodation can be found to suit every budget from budget hostels to 5 star luxury hotels. As a cheaper alternative for those on an extended stay, try an apartment.
