Cambodia Hotels Price Comparisons
Cambodia is a Buddhist kingdom of 15 million people in South East Asia, bordered by Vietnam on the east, Laos on the north and Thailand to the northwest. The country's history has not been a happy one, suffering for centuries from repeated invasions, colonial occupation and civil wars. Khmer is the official language with some French still spoken plus a token amount of English in the cities. Phnom Penh is the capital city.
Subsistence farming supports about 60% of the population and the provision of basic services cannot be compared with western standards. However, increasing numbers of visitors are discovering Cambodia's tourism highlights such as its temples and beaches. Tourism is fast becoming the money spinner for the country and visitor numbers are currently around 2.5 to 3 million per year. Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor Wat, welcomes flights from all over the south east Asian region and now boasts modern luxury hotels, nightspots and ATMs. Sihanoukville is an up-and-coming beach destination that compares with any of the other regional beach destinations. Travel into the interior, away from the popular tourist destinations, is an adventure and should be undertaken on an escorted basis with a guide that knows local conditions and customs.
