China At A Glance

China, officially known as the People's Republic of China, is approximately the same size as the entire USA. It has the world's largest population. in excess of a billion people, and shares a common border with 14 other nations. The capital city is Beijing, a city of some 17 million people, which is a major center of Chinese culture and the host city of the 2008 Olympic Games.

For centuries China has been a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts, sciences and inventions. After centuries of dynasties, imperial rulers, civil wars, regional warlords and various forms of internal turmoil and upheaval, China settled into a communist control regime in the period between the 1950's to the 1970's.

Since 1978, China has become an economic powerhouse that devours much of the world's natural resources in its insatiable appetite for development. Although big cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai are modern and comparatively wealthy, about 50% of Chinese still live in rural areas and eke out an existence from subsistence farming.

After decades of suspicion of the west, tourists are now welcomed into China and the attractions and activities are mind boggling in their scope and variety. From the ever popular Great wall of China, to the glitz and glamour of Shanghai, the spectacularly beautiful vistas at Guilin or the terracotta warriors at Xi'an, the list of places to go and things to do requires careful consideration and pre-planning.

The hundreds upon hundreds of modern hotels throughout the major Chinese cities bears testimony to China's desire to become one of the world's major tourist destinations.

During Chinese holiday periods, millions of workers return home and millions of other Chinese travel internally. Foreign travelers should consider scheduling their travel to avoid the major holidays. At the very least, travel should be planned well in advance.
