Dublin - capital city of The Republic of Ireland. Population of approx. 1 million.

The largest city in the country, Dublin is located on the east coast of Ireland at the mouth of the River Liffey. The city is Ireland's centre for finance, industry, education, media, culture and the arts.

Dating from the period of Viking settlement of Ireland, Dublin boasts some fine historical sites and examples of Georgian, Victorian and 18th century architecture. There are numerous museums, art galleries, churches, gardens and even cemeteries to explore and plenty of historical walking tours are available around the city. For something a bit different attend a Gaelic football game or hurling.

Visitors arrive via either of the two international airports, or by passenger ferry from Wales and England. An extensive and fairly reliable bus and train system provides transport in and around the city and to other cities and towns in Ireland. It is easy to get around the city, either on foot or by hiring a bicycle. Taxis are in plentiful supply. Like most large cities, traffic in the city during the day is heavy so driving is not recommended.

There are a wide range of shops, boutiques and week-end markets selling clothing, jewellery, unusual accessories or souvenirs such as Waterford Crystal, Aran sweaters and other Irish craft items.

Dublin has a cosmopolitan population so the numerous cafes, delicatessens, restaurants and cafes offer a mix of both local and international meals. Asian, Chinese and Indian restaurants are popular. A must when visiting Dublin is a visit to a traditional Irish Pub for a delicious, hearty pub meal.

Dublin nightlife is about raucous crowds and live music by Irish bands in some venues, or more sedate and sophisticated in others. Many concerts and festivals take place throughout the city such as festivals of Irish music and culture, food and drink, film, art, Chinese New Year and the renowned St Patrick's Day festival.

There are a large number of youth hostels, bed and breakfast establishments, mid range through to five star hotels to suit every budget, all dependent on location.
