Finland At A Glance

Finland is a land of northern lights, large areas of unspoiled nature and thousands of lakes and islands. The title of "Land of a Thousand Lakes" seriously understates the reality. Located in northern Europe, the country shares borders with Norway, Sweden and Russia. Finland has followed a welfare state model and has comfortable, well planned cities and towns and is one of the most developed hi-tech countries in the world.

Finland's history has resulted in the country being an amalgam of absorbed influences from west, east and south. It is a bilingual country, with Swedish and Finnish as the two recognised languages. It is a member of the European Union the official currency is the Euro.

During the short summer months, the Finns head for summer cottages to enjoy all manner of relaxation including sauna, swimming, fishing and BBQ's. The abundance of lakes, ocean and islands make the country an excellent boating and sailing destination.

The capital is Helsinki, a city of 1.3 million (including neighbouring towns). The city dates from the mid 1500's when Sweden established a trading post on the site. In the early 1800's the then occupying Russians decided to recreate a smaller version of St Petersburg and much of that influence is still on display today.

Accommodation throughout Finland is generally of a high standard, but visitors might find the prices to be expensive compared to other destinations.
