Greek Hotels Price Comparisons
This small Mediterranean country of approximately 11 million people has traditionally punched far above its weight when it comes to attracting tourist dollars. Ranked in the top 20 most visited countries, the Greek economy is very dependent on the many millions of visitors who visit each year.
The capital city is Athens, a crowded, ancient city of nearly 4 million people that is generally recognized at the birthplace of western civilization. The earliest pre-historic settlements at the site that was to become Athens have been dated to 3000 BC. Visitors to Greece are drawn by the warm, sunny summer weather, the sparkling blue oceans and welcoming islands, beaches, natural beauty and of course the numerous historical sites for which Greece is renowned. Reminders of the diversity of Greek history are evident at numerous historic sites throughout the country. Modern Greece is a member of the European Union, Greek is the official language and the Euro is the currency. In recent years Greece has seen an influx if immigrants from central Europe and south east Asia and approximately 10% of the current population are not of Greek descent. The cities in Greece come alive after dark with lots of entertainment in nightclubs, bars and traditional tavernas. Greek and western style food is available everywhere and prices are reasonable. Greeks love their sidewalk cafes and meeting up with their friends over coffee or a drink. Accommodation ranges from modern, luxury western style hotels through to budget backpacker hostels.
