Hammamet - a popular tourist destination in Tunisia. Population of approx. 30,000.

Famous for its jasmine, Hammamet is Tunisia's oldest tourist centre. The town is located on the Cap Bon Peninsula, about 50 klms (40 miles) south of the capital city of Tunis. Due to the influx of tourists during the summer holiday months, the population escalates considerably at that time.

Luxurious gardens and parks dominate the town and with modern 3 to 5 star hotels, wide sandy beaches offering a variety of water sports, local pottery and the summer festivals of music and theatre, it is a popular tourist attraction.

Most hotels have their own restaurants but there are plenty of cafes and eateries throughout the city. In addition, the city offers many historical sites, Arabian architecture and ruins, some dating back to the 15th century. French and English are both spoken. It is recommended that care should be exercised when travelling alone.
