Irish history has been bedevilled by colonialism, civil wars, famine and internal strife that existed until as recently as 1998, when a lasting treaty resolved the differences between the north and south. Much of early Irish history is still evident in the many castles and historic sites that dot the landscape. Ireland is a member of the European Union and the Euro is the official currency. However, the recent downturn in those economic sectors has impacted heavily on the Irish workforce.
