Johannesburg - largest city in South Africa. Population of approx. 10 million.

Johannesburg, including the adjoining areas of  Soweto, Lenasia, Ekurhuleni and the West Rand, is the largest city in South Africa. Built on the minerally rich range of hills of the Witwatersrand, the city is world renowned for its large scale diamond and gold trade.

Gold was discovered in the 1880s and the ensuing gold rush, establishment of prospecting settlements and the population explosion resulted in the birth of the city. Today this modern city is the economic capital of South Africa and one of the world's leading financial centres.
