The City of London, an area within Greater London, is an energetic city with a multicultural population of people from a diverse range of religions and cultures. Located in south east England on the River Thames, London is one of the major financial capitals of the world. Many national and international companies and institutions have their headquarters here. The city is an acknowledged leader in tourism, retail business, fashion, education institutions, entertainment, arts and a wide variety of industries including research and development, professional services, transport and commerce. London's history dates from the period of Roman occupation and the city has a wealth of World Heritage Sites and landmarks. Grand palaces, cathedrals and churches, monuments and bridges display a diverse range of architectural styles. Being the largest city in England and the United Kingdom there is plenty to see and do. Museums, art galleries, libraries, parks and gardens can be found throughout the city. Summer is the best time to visit when the daylight hours are long. Winters are cold and usually with some snow. Autumn and Spring are cool and rain falls sporadically throughout the year. London has five international airports which are serviced by a comprehensive transport network of buses, trains and an underground rail system that connects suburbs, nearby towns and cities throughout England. Taxis are in plentiful supply, bike hire is an alternative for sightseeing but car hire is not necessary or recommended. London is a very "walkable" city. There are an enormous number of restaurants, cafes and eateries which offer a huge variety of local and international menus to suit every taste and every budget. The city has a vibrant and exciting nightlife of clubs, bars and discotheques and throughout the year there is a wealth of entertainment on offer in the form of concerts, festivals, theatre performances and street parades. There is no shortage of accommodation throughout London which ranges from budget hostels through to exclusive luxury hotels. Prices fluctuate according to the location and proximity to the CBD.
