Luxor Hotels Price Comparisons
Luxor - major tourism center in Egypt. Population of approx. 500,000.
Originally the site of the ancient city of Thebes, Luxor is situated alongside the River Nile in upper Egypt. The city is divided into districts, with the old capital located on the west bank and the modern city on the east bank. Because of its close proximity to the famous Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens with their monuments, temples and tombs, Luxor is heavily dependent on tourism. Often referred to as the worlds greatest open air museum, there are many temple complexes, sculptures. monuments, tombs and ruins to explore in the area. The history of Luxor involves Babylonian, Phoenician, Canaanite, Roman and Greek dynasties. The city has been a major religious, art, political and military capital of Ancient Egypt for centuries. Turn back time and visit the older market near the Luxor temple although the constant bargaining can be frustrating. Numerous hotels and hostels on both the east and west banks offer a wide variety of holiday accommodation. Restaurants cater for local and western cuisine with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Non Muslim restaurants do serve alcohol, but travellers are reminded that Egypt is an Islamic country, and Muslims are forbidden to buy, sell, or consume alcohol.
