Madrid - capital city of Spain. Population of approx. 3 million.

Located on the Manzanares River in the north east of the country, Madrid is the largest city in Spain. It is a major global centre for finance and a large number of Spanish companies have their headquarters here. As well as being Spain's political centre, the city has a wide variety of other industries such as tourism, education, entertainment, arts and fashion.

The city has a climate of hot dry summers, fairly cold winters some with light snow and mild autumn and spring which are the rainfall periods.

With a history that pre-dates the Roman Empire, Madrid has many historical buildings and landmarks which proudly stand alongside the city's contemporary skyscrapers. Churches, mosques, temples and palaces are scattered throughout the city. There are numerous museums, art galleries and libraries displaying memorable historical items and plenty of parks and gardens for a leisurely stroll. Attend an opera, concert or a flamenco show or take a walking tour of the city.

Madrid has an international airport and boasts a world renowned public transport network of trains, buses and subways. Traffic in the city is dense and compounded with narrow roads, so renting a car is not recommended for visitors.

Well known for its vibrant nightlife, Madrid has many bars, clubs, lounges and music venues providing wonderful entertainment. Shopping malls, stores, factory outlets, chic boutiques and markets provide for a great shopping experience.

There are many tapas bars, restaurants, delicatessens and cafes for those on a budget. However, excellent food and great coffee at reasonable prices can be found in some of the more upmarket restaurants and cafes. Splurge on an authentic Spanish paella at one of the more expensive restaurants.

Accommodation ranges from hostels or apartments to the deluxe rooms and suites in the expensive and luxurious 5 star hotels. Prices are dependent on location and the advent of the tourist season.
