Marrakech - the capital city of Morocco. Population of approx. 1.1 million.

Known as the "Red City" because of the red tinted mud walls around the city, Marrakech is a wonderful "oasis" boasting a prolific array of fruits, native and imported plants, trees, flowers and cacti. It comes as a surprise to many people that the European mainland is only 2-3 hours away.

Marrakech is a city of two parts - the old fortified city dating from 1070 and the new modern city. Located at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, the city is bordered by desert to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Visitors will find a varied mix of activities and attractions, ranging from religious festivals,  interesting historical, architectural sites and tombs, museums, art galleries, numerous markets offering hand crafted products and open air performances in the city squares.

There is a variety of accommodation available but grand old houses, called riads, which have been converted into hotels and inns, are wonderful places to stay. Excellent Moroccan cuisine is available in some restaurants and also from the abundance of licensed food stalls in the Medina - the old, historic district of the city.
