Morocco At A Glance

Morocco sits at the top of the African continent and is located just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Gibraltar. The country has a coastline that looks out onto both the North Atlantic ocean as well as the Mediterranean Sea.

The history of the country has been influenced by different colonial powers. The influence of the Spanish is still evident in enclaves along the Mediterranean. Morocco gained its independence from France in 1956 and evidence of the French influence are still visible in the country.

The Atlantic coast area of the country is the region that attracts most visitors. Rabat and Casablanca both lie on the coast which is dotted with laid back beach towns such as Essaouira and Agadir. Once you head inland from the coast, the activities become limited to sand dunes and camel rides in the desert.

Rabat is the capital city, and has a relaxed, easy going approach compared to the strict Muslim culture that applies elsewhere in the country. Rabat has train services that connect to all the other major cities in the country with short travel times on the express services.
