Moscow - capital city of Russia. Population of approx. 13 million (in greater metro area)

Moscow is a 950 years old, sprawling metropolis that is the largest city in Europe and approximately 10% of all Russian citizens live in the metropolitan area. The city is the political, financial and economic centre of Russia and the states of the former Soviet Union.

Moscow is Russia's major educational center with over 220 institutes, universities and colleges, most teaching a specific subject. The Moscow of today offers some of the best business management, science and arts faculties in the world.

The Red Square lies at the heart of city and is surrounded by other iconic tourist sites such as St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum and the State History Museum. Numerous reminders of Moscow's imperial and Soviet history are on display throughout the city in the form of historic cathedrals, monasteries, museums, Soviet-era statues and theatres.

Most Russians do not speak English so pre-planning your visit in some detail and having good English language reference material is recommended. Most western style hotels and better restaurants (ie more expensive) will have some English speaking staff.

Central Moscow is an easy place explore by walking, but when cross city distances are huge, the renowned metro system is the way to travel. It is comprehensive system and boasts some great architecture at some of the stations. Travel above ground is by bus and trolleybus. Moscow taxis are hailed from the kerb and chances are you'll end up agreeing a price with moonlighting Muscovite supplementing their income.

Fine dining and Moscow are not usually found in the same sentence and restaurant dining can be expensive. As always, there are the usual western style fast food outlets near most of the popular tourist sites. For a taste of something authentic and a little different, look for restaurants that serve Azerbaijani and Armenian cuisine. "Eat as you go" hot dogs, sausages, meat pastries and kebabs are always available from street vendors throughout the city.

Moscow accommodation is plentiful and varied, ranging from budget backpacker hostels, through mod-range boutique hotels, apartments up to 5 star luxury.
