Paris - capital city of France. Population of approx. 12 million (in the greater metro area)

Paris, the the City of Light, is located on the river Seine in the north of France. Considered by many to be the most beautiful and romantic of all the major world cities, Paris is crammed with historic sites and has a vast influence on world fashion, art, culture, food and design. It is the epicentre of the world's most famous fashion and cosmetic houses.

The city is the most popular tourist destination in the world with a staggering 45 million tourists visiting every year. Synonymous with the iconic landmarks of the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre and Moulin Rouge, Paris also lays claim to having the second highest number of Michelin rated restaurants in the world. A large part of the city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The population of Paris comprises a diverse ethnic mix of original French along with immigrants from the ex-colonial countries in Africa as well as Vietnam and Laos. People from Latin American countries are the most recent arrivals into this ethnic melting pot.

Paris enjoys a climate of warm summers and cool winters and the influence of the Atlantic Ocean has a moderating effect on climate extremes. Snow falls a few times a year and most rainfall consists of light falls year-round.

Paris is very "walkable" and the best and cheapest way to see the city sights is on foot. Using the Metro subway rail system is the perfect option for trips of any distance. The are 16 lines criss-crossing the city with prominently signed Metro stations never far away. Several excellent boat services operate on the Seine, providing cheap transport to much of central Paris and are an excellent way to see many of Paris' highlights. Renting a car in Paris is not recommended, as the traffic volume is chaotic during the day and finding parking can be a nightmare.

While not everyone agrees that Paris is the epicentre of fine dining, the city nevertheless has some excellent culinary credentials. The restaurant trade emerged here just over 200 years ago and continues to thrive. The more recent waves of immigration has seen the introduction of international cuisines that round out a very broad Parisian dining experience.

Accommodation in Paris is plentiful and varied, including budget backpacker hostels, family bed and breakfast establishments, serviced and unserviced apartments, boutique hotels and the very best of contemporary 5 star luxury.
