Perth - capital city of Western Australia. Population of approx. 1.3 million

Perth straddles the picturesque Swan River, home of the elegant black swans that are the Western Australia state emblem. The city has retained its country town charm and makes a pleasant change from the hustle and bustle of the other state cities on the eastern seaboard.

Civic buildings in the city dating from first settlement and built by the first convicts still stand proudly amongst the modern skyscrapers. Visitors will find a selection of accommodation that caters to all budgets. Perth hotels mostly offer the traditional suite style of lodgings with dining in on-site restaurants. Apartment style accommodation is available but is not widely available.

The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate which fits well with the relaxed sidewalk cafe lifestyle. The Swan River, near city beaches and quick access to the ocean underpin the popularity of water based leisure activities in and around Perth. Kings Park, set in landscaped Botanic Gardens that showcase unique local flora, sits on a hill across the river from the city centre and provides a good vantage point.

The Perth restaurant precinct is Northbridge, just a few minutes stroll from the CBD. The Burswood Entertainment Complex is one of Australia's finest casino and entertainment venues and has a great setting overlooking the river and city.

The Cloisters, Central Government Buildings, the Deanery, Perth Mint, Government House, Perth Town Hall and the Palace Hotel are some of the better known examples of the city's heritage buildings taht are fully restored, convict-built originals. A reminder of yesteryear is the restored Old Flour Mill and a wonderful example of early colonial architecture can be seen at Tranby House overlooking the Swan River.

Pay a visit to the Perth Cultural Centre to learn more about the region, especially the gallery of Aboriginal history, and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Two Perth beaches that front the Indian Ocean are Scarborough and Cottesloe, both popular swimming beaches. Relax with a Swan River river cruise up into the Swan Valley winegrowing area.
