Philippines At A Glance

An archipelago in South-East Asia, the Philippines is a nation of over 7,100 islands, located east of Vietnam in the South China Sea, that support a population nearing 100 million. Due to the influence of 300 years of Spanish colonial rule, the country is the largest Catholic country in Asia.

The capital city is Manilla, a sprawling metropolis where close on 12 million people live in the greater metro area. Manilla is located on the west coast of the island of Luzon.

The Philippines, and Manilla in particular, suffered greatly during WWII, when the bombing and occupation destroyed much of what had been one of the jewels of SE Asia. However, much of the early history of the Philippines is still evident in the historic sites throughout the country.
