Prague Hotels Price Comparisons
Prague - capital city of the Czech Republic. Population of approx. 2.3 million (metro area)
Prague is a beautiful city of cathedrals, church domes, gold-tipped towers and bridges and is considered by many to be one of Europe's "must see" destinations. It is one of the largest cities in Central Europe and for centuries it has been the capital of the historic region of Bohemia. The city spreads over nine hills and overlooks the Vltava River in the Czech Republic. The rich diversity of its history has resulted in a cosmopolitan city that has been influenced by many of the significant events of that have shaped Europe. For over 1,100 years Prague has been a cultural, political and economic center. Many of Pragues' historic landmarks and famous cultural attractions survived the carnage and destruction of the World Wars of the 1900's. In 1992, the historic medieval city center, a wonderful mix of ancient cobbled lanes, courtyards, cathedrals, church spires and majestic 9th century castle, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each year since the fall of the Iron Curtain, more than 4 million people visit Prague making it the sixth most-visited European city and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It is a statement of the obvious to say that tourism plays a major role in Prague's economy. Prague is an easy city to get around with an efficient public transport network of subway, bus and trams that services all the popular tourist sites. It is also an easy walking city but visitors need to remember that most of the street surfaces consist of uneven cobble stones which may pose problems for some people. Traditional Czech cuisine is typically based on pork or beef accompanied by dumplings, potatoes or fries. Most restaurants become very crowded during lunch and dinner. A common sight is street vendors selling Czech style hot dogs and mulled wine for an "eat as you go treat" and most Prague beer halls serve light snacks or meals. Western style fast food outlets are a common sight around all the major tourist spots. Prague offers a wide selection of accommodation options, many within walking distance of the town centre. Prices will generally be higher in the tourist peak season and can be up to double the off season rates. Accommodation reservations are advised at all times.
