From its origins as a Portuguese settlement in 1565, Rio de Janeiro has become the second largest city in Brazil. It is a city of universities, colleges and learning institutions, research centres and is the headquarters for media and communication companies. Rio is world renowned for its breathtaking scenery, Sugar Loaf Mountain, the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer, the iconic beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the annual carnival and a spectacular harbour. Rio's Carnival is held annually 40 days prior to Easter and the event draws thousands of tourists from all over the world to enjoy the music, dancing and entertainment over the four day celebration. Taxis are the best way to travel around Rio although the most convenient and cheapest transport is buses. Depending on your destination, there is also a Metro subway system. For further afield adventures, a hire car would be the best mode of transport. There are plenty of cafeterias, restaurants, food outlets and street vendors throughout the city catering to every budget. There is traditional Brazilian food, a wide assortment of fresh and tasty seafood. Japanese and Asian cuisine, buffet style or all-you can-eat restaurants. pastries, pizza, pasta and fast food chains. Bars and kiosks offer an awesome variety of refreshing fruit juices. smoothies, beers and liquor. Accommodation ranges from hostels, bed and breakfasts, to apartment-style accommodation or more expensive upmarket hotels. Most of the popular hotels are located near the beaches. Prices fluctuate depending on the time of year.
