Rome, known as the the 'Eternal City', is synonymous with being the epicentre of the Roman Empire, the site of the Vatican City and the cradle of much of western civilisation as we know it today. As a seat of power for much of its 2500 years of existence, Rome has been one of the most influential cities in the world in shaping culture and religion. Rome has an incredibly diverse and rich historical heritage and that, combined with a cosmopolitan society, makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The magnificent palaces, historic churches and basilicas, imposing ruins, grandiose monuments and statues and graceful fountains of the Historic Center of the city combine to make this area a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rome of today is a shopping mecca, regarded by many as one of the fashion capitals of the world. Many of Italy's haute couture names were founded in the city. Rome has a vibrant nightlife scene and with so many sights and things to do in the daylight hours, this is truly a 24 hour city. Getting around Rome is not difficult as there is a public transport system of bus, Metro and tram. Passes are available for daily, 3 day, weekly and monthly travel on all parts of the network. Rome also has several companies that operate "hop on, hop off" city tour buses which run services that connect with all the major tourist sites. Car rental in Rome is not for the faint hearted as the traffic is chaotic! Scooter and bicycle hire are other ways to see the city but the traffic factor does have to be considered. Most visitors find that once in the city centre, walking is by far the best way to appreciate the surroundings. The city is crammed full of good restaurants, many of them in attractive settings especially for outdoor dining in the evening. The ever present pizza is a staple of Rome dining but be aware that many restaurants only serve pizza in the evening. As one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, Rome has an incredible range of choices when it comes to places stay, and you will have the choice of whatever type of accommodation you wish. Prices usually vary with the tourist seasons, being cheaper during the low season and more expensive during the peak visitor season.
