Russia At A Glance

Russia (aka Russian Federation) is by far the the largest country in the world and spans nine time zones. The area within Russian borders is almost twice as big as Canada, the next largest country. Much of Russia consists of poor soils and extreme climates that rule out any sustainable agriculture, although the country has immense reservoirs of oil and natural gas.

It is Russia's cultural capital, home to the Hermitage, one of the world's best museums and the city centre is a living open air museum in its own right.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg have international airports that service direct flights from most European capitals. Moscow also has direct flights to many cities in East Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and North America.

Russia has an extensive rail network that links most cities and towns and trains are usually the most convenient option for overnight trips. Although train accommodation may not be on a par with Europe's best, the staff are courteous and efficient and departures and arrivals are timely.
