South Africa At A Glance

The Republic of South Africa sits at the bottom of the African continent and offers her visitors a great deal of variety, both in the cultural mix and diversity of the population as well as the numerous natural attractions for which the country is renowned. The country is flanked by the Indian Ocean to the east and the Atlantic ocean to the west and the two meet at Cape Point. The country has 2,800 klms of coastline.

Much of South Africa's wealth comes from the ground in the form of gold mines in the Transvaal, diamond mines in Kimberley and Namiba, world class wines from Stellenbosch and the Western Cape and assorted agriculture in most areas.

Approximately 80% of the 49 million population is of black African ancestry, made up of a variety of ethnic groups speaking nine different, official Bantu languages. South Africa also has the largest European, Indian, and racially mixed communities in Africa.

From a tourism stand point, South Africa is best known for its game parks which are mostly located in the northern regions of Natal and the Transvaal. The Kruger National Park is the best known nature reserve and there are numerous others, both state run and private, that provide a wide range of game viewing opportunities.
