Spain At A Glance

Once the epicentre of a great colonial power with territories throughout the world, the Spain of today is one of the largest countries in Europe, a diverse country of 40 million people that shares the Iberian peninsula with Portugal. Spain is a member of the European Union and the unit of currency is the Euro.

This is a country steeped in history that has the largest number of UNESCO World Heritage cities and is second only to Italy for the highest number of World Heritage sites. With its great Mediterranean beaches, vibrant nightlife, diverse cultural regions and historic cities, Spain is a deservedly popular destination for a European holiday.

The capital city, and Spain's largest, is Madrid with a population of almost 6 million throughout the metro area. This is a city synonymous with historic sites, museums, art galleries, imposing cathedrals, churches and medieval architecture. Modern Madrid is full of new architecture, lifestyle and culture with a pulsating nightlife and the most bars per capita of any European city.

Some of the other popular destinations in Spain are the vibrant coastal city of Barcelona, Pamplona and the "Running of the Bulls" and the Moorish influenced cities of Seville, Granada and Córdoba.

Seeing Spain with a self drive tour is great way to see the country but driving in the big cities and major towns is not recommended for visitors. Parking is a major problem and fines are severe. There is an efficient bus service that criss-crosses the country and fares are reasonable. The national rail service is Renfe which operates an on-time service for all long distance travel.
