Stockholm Hotels Price Comparisons
Stockholm - capital city of Sweden. Population of approx. 2 million (in the greater metro area)
The city of Stockholm dates from 1250 and is located on Lake Mälaren which is part of a Baltic Sea maze of 24,000 islands and islets. The city precinct comprises 14 islands connected by approximately 50 bridges and as the largest city in Sweden, it is also the most populated urban area in all of Scandinavia. The Stockholm of today is a modern, technologically advanced city with a diverse mix of cultures and nationalities. Stockholm is Sweden's primary cultural, media, political, and economic centre. Often referred to as The Venice of The North, the city is known for its natural beauty, historic buildings, an abundance of water and its many parks. Approximately 30% of the city is made up of green belts. Various service and IT industries employ approximately 85% of the Stockholm population and the lack of heavy industry helps Stockholm stay one of the world's cleanest capitals. Visitors to Stockholm will find a uniquely picturesque city of palaces, churches and museums where the climate changes between the seasons are quite significant. Summers are all about green leaves, bright sunny days and mild nights whereas the winters are dark, rainy and cold with snow. Getting around in Stockholm is easy. There is an extensive, integrated transport network of subway, trains and buses as well as ferries and trams that all use a coupon based ticket system. Visitors can buy passes that provide for travel on the network ranging anywhere from 24 hours to 30 days. Taxis can be expensive and the market is deregulated, so there are no metered fares. Most visitors will find dining out in Stockholm restaurants is expensive. The city has its share of the usual franchised fast food outlets and budget Asian take-aways. Anyone on a budget and staying for a few days will probably find self catering a cheaper option and this will require accommodation that has kitchen facilities. Accommodation in Stockholm is available in all price ranges from economy backpacker hostels and lodges up to 5 star luxury hotels.
