Sweden At A Glance

Sweden is the largest of the Nordic countries of Northern Europe and has a population of about 9.5 million. Her neighbours are Norway, Finland and Denmark. Sweden is a member of the European Union but has retained the Swedish Krona as the official currency. Swedish (with some Finnish) is the common language, and most Swedes are fluent in English.

The country is a highly developed capitalist, industrial society that provides its people with an advanced welfare state. The standard of living and longevity in Sweden rank among the highest in the world. Swedes enjoy outdoor life such as skiing, skating, hiking, canoeing and cycling. Like all Nordic countries most parts of Sweden see a huge seasonal variation in sunlight that ranges from over 18 hours of daylight around midsummer, down to less than 6 hours of daylight in mid winter.

The capital is Stockholm, a city of some fourteen islands connected by fifty bridges. This beautiful capital has a picturesque setting that makes the city unique and some of its historic buildings date from the 15th century. The areas surrounding Stockholm are a maze of waterways and inlets influenced by the nearby Baltic Sea. Stockholm for the visitor is all about palaces, historic medieval town squares, open air museums and the stunning natural beauty of the archipelago on which the city stands.

Lokaltrafik runs an extensive Stockholm transport network using a coupons system for subway, commuter train and bus system plus tram, light rail and ferry services. Visitors should be aware that taxis are unregulated in Stockholm and there is no set fare system.

Elsewhere in Sweden, there is an extensive railway network. Most major lines are operated SJ and tickets can be purchased online from their website. An efficient bus service also connects the major Swedish towns and cities.
