Taiwan At A Glance

This tiny island nation is one of the most densely populated places in the world, being home to more than 23 million people. The island is located off the south-eastern coast of China, and while it is officially under China's control, a far more liberal, westernized form of government is in effect compared to the mainland.

The Taiwanese, while nearly all Chinese, have two separate historical backgrounds. The majority of the population are descended from families who migrated from the mainland many centuries ago as well as a later group who fled the mainland when it fell to communist control in 1949. This historical difference has resulted in different dialects being spoken. 

During the latter stages of the 20th century, Taiwan experienced rapid economic growth and modernization, becoming one of the richest and most modern economies in the world and an economic powerhouse of south east Asia. Taiwan still remains a leader in the manufacture and export of consumer electronics.

Despite the general perception that there is little in the way of tourist attractions, Taiwan does have some impressive scenic sites. The city of Taipei is a vibrant center for entertainment and  culture and is at the center of Chinese pop culture. Taiwanese cuisine is highly regarded.
