United Arab Emirates At A Glance

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven oil producing emirates, located at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The UAE has a rich history and culture and is a great starting point for Middle East travels. The capital city is Abu Dhabi although Dubai is probably the best known city, being the transport and commerce center of the UAE. 

The UAE has a widely diverse population with only about 20% of the population being Emiratis. Approximately 50% are from the Indian subcontinent plus another group from south east Asia and the remainder from everywhere else.

In the cities such as Dubai and Sharjah, travellers will see see people from every ethnic group and every social class. This diversity drives the need for a common language, and as a consequence some version of English is commonly spoken throughout the UAE, particularly in the hospitality industry.

Dubai is famous for having the tallest building in the world and for the cutting edge architecture and engineering that has created some of the most awe inspiring hotels to be found anywhere in the world.
