Venice - major tourist centre of Italy. Population of approx. 60,000 (in the historic city).

Venice dates back to 830 and stands as a monument to the glory days of the Renaissance. The cultures of that period still pervade the city of today which adds to the charm and fascinating character on display everywhere you turn. This is a city of churches, palaces, museums, piazzas, bridges and canals.

This city on a lagoon is almost exactly the same as it was six hundred years ago and is one of the most interesting and lovely cities in the world. While the city might have deteriorated since its heyday, it has retained the romantic charm that attracts hordes of modern day tourists. The summer is hot and humid, the winters cold and wet so the best times to visit are spring and fall. Being a city without cars, there is an absence of smog, a rarity in today's world.

The tide influenced high water event (acqua alta) is a fact of life in Venice. This is when the lagoon water level rises and floods the squares and streets. This event can happen at irregular intervals several times a year, usually in the winter months. Sirens will sound to warn residents and businesses when the city begins to flood.

Being a pedestrians only city, Venice is easy to walk and the absence of cars makes this a great way to explore. For something a bit faster, vaporetti (water buses) and water taxis are the preferred choice and its usually a lot cheaper to use vaporetti than private water taxis. For a slow, romantic ride along the canals, the famous gondolas still ply their trade .... but be aware that he prices are expensive!

Venice is packed full of all manner of shops in every corner and crevice. Shopping for novelty items and souvenirs can be a great way to see the city. Venice is not a place for full-on nightlife as the city's population consists mainly of visiting tourists and locals who service that industry. However, there are some excellent places for sampling great Italian food and drink.

Most visitors will find hotels in Venice are expensive and that bed and breakfasts offer better value. In recent times, the number of short stay apartment rentals has increased in both number and quality although a three night minimum stay is usually required.
