Vienna Hotels Price Comparisons
Vienna - capital city of Austria. Population of approx. 1.7 million
One of Europe's great cities for palaces, churches and museums, Vienna is the economic, political and cultural heart of Austria. It is also the largest city by far and still has the all trappings and extravagances of the imperial capital that it once was. Vienna is one of Europe's historic treasures and the city centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and considered by many to be an open-air museum. Vienna was the seat of the Habsburg court for several centuries until their influence ended in 1918. The court held tremendous sway over the population and even now, Vienna's culture is still influenced by those days of imperial rule. The traditional, historic Vienna is only one of this city's façades. This is also a dynamic, contemporary city with a modern, independent music scene and cult music stores, a vibrant nightclub scene and hordes of street performers. Vienna has a well established coffee culture and despite the arrival of the western style coffee franchises, the traditional Kaffeehauskultur remains the traditional way to drink a cup of coffee, relax and meet up with friends. The city area has an excellent public transport system of commuter rail, underground, trams and buses. The subway network is very efficient and has stations within a few minutes walk of all the major tourist sites. Taxis can normally be hailed on the street or found at a taxi-stand. Cycling is a viable option for getting around in Vienna, due to the city's compact size. Most sites of interest are within a 30-45 minute ride and there are lots of bicycle paths along major streets, river bikeways and through the parks. Vienna offers her visitors a complete range of hotel choices and prices are usually higher than neighbouring countries. Good accommodation can be found outside the city and the extensive rail network means that travel from a cheaper, outlying address might be no more that 20 minutes from the city centre.
