Vietnam Hotels Price Comparisons
Vietnam is a socialist republic that occupies a long, thin strip along the coastline of south east Asia. Ravaged by war and colonialism for much of its modern history, the north and south reunified at the end of the Vietnam war and the country is now making slow but steady progress with a programme of modernization. One of its core objectives is the development of a viable tourism industry.
The capital is Hanoi, a city of 6.5 million people, located in the central north of the country. Hanoi is a charming blend of East and West, with a strong influence from the centuries of Chinese dominance, combined with the elegance and flair left over from a French colonial past. A notable feature of Hanoi that makes it very different than other high population cities is that only a few buildings in the city center are taller than five floors. The Old Quarter of the city has long stretches of well-preserved colonial and pre-colonial architecture, wrapped around warrens of narrow streets. Over two thirds of the Vietnam population were born since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. Western tourists receive a warm, friendly welcome in Vietnam and many other younger people aspire to a western lifestyle, despite the restrictions found in a communist country. Citizens of most western countries will require a visa for entry into Vietnam.
